Bowlby's Maternal deprivation hypothesis

Bowlby- Maternal deprivation
Maternal deprivation is caused when the breaking of the bond with the mother occurs during the critical period. This leads to irreversible damage and problems with social functioning.

Disruption of Attachment+ Inability to form relationships with others+ Lack of moral constraints on behaviour = Delinquency

Bowlby claimed that maternal deprivation has the following consequences on the child:
·         Affectionless psychopathy (showing no feeling for others)
·         Aggression
·         Depression
·         Delinquency
·         Dependency anxiety ‘clinging’
·         Dwarfism
·         Intellectual retardation
·         Social maladjustment
